"For many months we considered how to present and market a Viresco microbial product suitable for use in aquariums. When 5g (about 2 teaspoonsful) of Viresco Aqua will treat 3,000 gallons (13,600 litres) of pond water, how can a product that will treat say 10 gallons (45 litres) be packed and presented for sale to the consumer and trade. We initially considered bulking up the Viresco product with a suitable powdered material filler but eventually decided to pack it down. In early 2003, we brought out Viresco packed in gelatine based soluble capsules. Each 0.21ml capsule of Viresco Aquarium will treat 10 to 15 gallons (45 to 70 litres) of water in cold water and tropical aquariums."

It is important to keep the Viresco AQUARIUM (and also AQUA and Viresco KOI) mixture in a shaded place indoors. This is because the ultra iolet (UV) radiation from the sun during daylight conditions could damage some of the microbes and bacteria in the Viresco products.

Viresco AQUARIUM
In July 1999 the first pack of Viresco AQUA was sold to a koi keeper who had a pond with a large glass plate to be able to view his koi underwater. The plate was 7.5 ft by 4.2 ft. After 5 days of treatment the koi keeper rang to say he had put the Viresco into his pond on the day he bought it and while he normally had to wipe down the glass plate every single day to clear it of algae bloom he no longer had to do this. He said that the day after he applied the Viresco AQUA there were no algae sticking to the glass plate.
Now for sure the Viresco AQUA would not have reduced nitrate in the pond to zero in one day only and this was therefore a bit of a puzzle. The algae still had to be present but the algae was not sticking to the glass plate. After investigation it was concluded that microbes in Viresco AQUA were taking up positions on the glass plate in preference to the algae themselves and this was preventing the algae bloom from sticking to the pond's glass plate.
By the way that was in 1999 and now some 5+ years later the koi pond keeper is still not having to clean the glass plate. What a great story and testament to the efficacy of Viresco AQUA.
AS all aquarium keepers know ... the continuous build-up of algae on the glass can be a major cause of frustration and maintenance hassles. John McLauchlan then decided to look for a way to commercialize the use of Viresco AQUA suitable for the small doses that would be required in aquariums.
Towards the end of Summer in 2002, Viresco AQUARIUM was used in trials by a number of aquarists. Simon Wolstencroft, the editor of Tropical Fish magazine was one of these people. In the February issue of "Tropical Fish Magazine", Simon reported the results of his 3 months trial which came to an end at Christmas time 2002. The nitrate reading before the application of Viresco was 25mg/l (ie 25 ppm) and, after only 10 days from the first application of the Viresco, it had dropped to half the original value. Within one month it then dropped to nil. Simon stated:
Furthermore, in almost three months of continuous use, the front glass of the aquarium has not needed to be cleaned of algae, and there has been a considerable reduction in sludge. Our verdict: We cant quite figure out how this product works but work it does. An absolute essential for freshwater fishkeepers.
